FlexCold’s modern design strongly leans into its ability to manage energy usage which behind labor, is the second highest cost in a cold storage warehouse. Further, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reports the food sector accounts for around 30% of the world’s total energy consumption.
We first looked at how we can minimize our footprint without sacrificing storage capacity which led us to the FLEXSPACE Mobile Racking System. A widely used system for over 55 years in Europe, the mobile racking system is now embraced by cold storage operators who are looking for a more efficient, energy-conserving, space-optimizing pallet storage system.
Designing in sustainability at FlexCold
To optimize the energy usage FlexCold-Jacksonville, we started at the blueprint stage. Designing and programming our cold storage warehouse for greater storage densification on a smaller facility footprint is an energy and storage capacity win/win.
Including the FLEXSPACE Mobile Racking System at the blueprint stage helped us maximize storage densification on a smaller facility footprint. The ripple effect impacts many aspects of the budget and planning process from the size of the facility, cost to build, future overhead costs, and profitability. By “designing in” the desired density on a smaller footprint, we are immediately creating an efficient, modern, sustainable facility and conserving energy and resources from the get-go. Less square footage points directly to less energy, less equipment that uses energy, and labor that utilizes energy.
Modern design at FlexCold is not only maximizing storage capacity in a smaller warehouse footprint, but having a modern plan to that utilizes less energy and land resources and contributes to a sustainable, energy-efficient culture.
